And Maryland put up a helluva fight against Ga Tech Saturday afternoon.
Jeez! I thought the Maryland-UNC game was a great game, but both Tech and
Maryland put on a truly awsome display of offensive power. Tech shot 70% for
the game, with a sizzling 18 for 21 second half effort to win.

UNC watch out, the preseason number one team is finally playing like they
should! Ask John Salley, who's childish cockiness has been part of the
problem with Tech thus far this year -- "I feel the chemistry we had last year
is back. I'm serious." With Salley's mind in gear and Price's legs in
shape Duke and UNC beter be ready for the ACC tournament!

Well, Jeff Offutt (by the way, that's a very nice first name :-) ),
I think perhaps you are a bit prejudiced about Georgia Tech.
However, you do make a good point. Maryland did play a very good
game -- Tech, however, played the game of the year. UNC is
slightly handicapped right now with 2 major players out of the
game. I suspect this is why they lost so big to N.C. State on
Sunday. I do agree that Georgia Tech has a decent chance of being
national champs, but I do not think they would stand such a chance
if North Carolina had all its players healthy. I haven't watched
Duke much this year so I can't really comment on their chances. My
prediction for the ACC tournament? Look for Virginia to play
either Tech or UNC. Why? Dunno.

First came UCLA, and then the ACC. What else was/is there?

Surely you jest. However, in case you are serious let me remind you of a few
facts you may have overlooked before making this statement. If memory serves me
correctly, UCLA's last NCAA basketball championship was in 1975. Since then
the following teams have won NCAA basketball championships:

1976 - Indiana
1977 - Marquette
1978 - Kentucky
1979 - Michigan St.
1980 - Louisville
1981 - Indiana
1982 - North Carolina
1983 - North Carolina St.
1984 - Georgetown
1985 - Villanova

If we break these championships down into conferences it looks like this:

BIG TEN - 3 championships since UCLA's last
Big East - 2 championships since UCLA's last
ACC - 2 championships since UCLA's last
Metro - 1 championship since UCLA's last
Southeastern - 1 championship since UCLA's last
Independents - 1 championship since UCLA's last

Obviously there was/is a lot more than the ACC after UCLA. This is not to say
that the ACC is a weak conference (this year it is obvious that the ACC is the
strongest); but it does say that the ACC is not the center of the college
basketball universe. If there was a dominant conference immediately after
UCLA, I would say it was the Big Ten. In fact in 1976 two Big Ten teams
(Indiana and Michigan) played for the NCAA championship, a feat which was not
repeated until last year when Georgetown and Villanova played for the title.
From the above stats it appears that the ACC established dominance around
the early 80's and the Big East was the dominant conference for the last two
years (hard to say, there were a lot of upsets in all those years). My point
is that there is a lot of good basketball across the country and I believe for
the time being we are past the point where one team or one conference will
dominate for more than a year or two.
