OK, after a fast and furious week of basketball, the six conference champions
and wild card teams for the CIAU regional tournaments this weekend have been
determined.
First, the conference playoffs (we'll do it from west to east--I am a
westerner despite going to an Ontario university).
Canada West:
Final
Lethbridge Pronghorns 86 Saskatchewan Huskies 76
Great Plains:
Semifinals
Brandon Bobcats 86 Winnipeg Wesmen 76
Manitoba Bisons 103 Regina Cougars 77
Final
Manitoba def. Brandon (sorry, no score available).
Brandon had to win to qualify for the CIAU tournament because the team
was on probation this season.
Ontario West:
Semifinals
Waterloo Warriors 77 McMaster Marauders 55
Western Ontario Mustangs 87 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 75
Final
Waterloo 71 Western 66 (*not* 64-59 as our "National Newspaper",
Toronto's _The_Grope_and_Flail_, had it)
Ontario East:
Semifinals
Toronto Varsity Blues 84 Laurentian Voyageurs 81 (2OT)
York Yeomen 112 Queen's Golden Gaels 52
Final
York 67 Toronto 63
Quebec:
Semifinal
McGill Redmen def. Trois Rivieres Patriotes
Final
McGill 68 Concordia Stingers 66
Atlantic:
Semifinals
Prince Edward Island Panthers def. Acadia Axemen
Dalhousie Tigers def. St. Francis Xavier X-Men
Final
PEI 65 Dalhousie 58
The rankings (16 teams instead of the usual Top Ten):
Previous ranking is in parentheses.
1. Manitoba ( 1)
2. Victoria ( 2)
3. Waterloo ( 8)
4. York ( 5)
5. Lethbridge ( 7)
6. PEI (NR)
7. McGill (NR)
8. Winnipeg ( 3)
9. Concordia ( 4)
10. Dalhousie ( 6)
11. Western Ontario ( 9)
12. Saskatchewan (10)
13. St. Francis Xavier (NR)
14. Calgary (NR)
15. Acadia (NR)
16. Toronto (NR)
The regional tournament draws:
West Regional (University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta)
(13) St. Francis Xavier vs. ( 2) Victoria
( 9) Concordia vs. ( 5) Lethbridge
Mid-West Regional (University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan)
(16) Toronto vs. ( 1) Manitoba
(10) Dalhousie vs. (12) Saskatchewan
Mid-East Regional (University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario)
( 8) Winnipeg vs. ( 7) McGill
(14) Calgary vs. ( 3) Waterloo
East Regional (Acadia University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia)
(11) Western Ontario vs. ( 6) Prince Edward Island
( 4) York vs. (15) Acadia
The four tournament winners advance to the Final Four, hosted by
Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
For the first time under this playoff format there are two teams
from each of Quebec and Ontario East in regional tournaments.
The Atlantic and Canada West conferences are sending their usual complement of
four teams each. Great Plains and Ontario West have two qualifiers each (in
previous years they have had three, due to the weakness of thee Quebec and
Ontario East conferences).
I'm not offering any predictions (publicly, anyway).
