From: Mark Weiser <mark%umcp-cs@CSNet-Relay> I just received a small packet of literature from General Optronics Corp (201-549-9000) describing their laser printer offering. It is a 300dpi dry process laser printer with 28 pages per minute printing. Its box looks a little like the Xerox--sits on the floor rather than a table. They claim an army of field service people already out there--but isn't 28ppm too fast to be the xerox engine? They claim to have over 1300 fonts available but make no mention of anything like troff or tex. The glossy talks about printing right off the crt and simulating daisywheel printers, so perhaps they don't know their market very well. Their sample with the information packet used only roman and italic fonts at a single point size. When I first called they refused to answer any questions until I received my literature packet. The literature packet answered absolutely none of my questions, so I called back. There was no one in the office who could answer technical things--but they promised to get back with me. Speculation or knowledge about this company and their product would be welcome. Oh, I forgot to say what makes this product so interesting: quantity one price is $11,995.
