From mark%umcp-cs@CSNet-Relay Thu Feb 2 19:36:45 1984 (i.e. Imagen vs. QMS printers for Unix). I have formed the following opinion: QMS (xerox engine) prints a darker image with fewer dropouts and better large dark areas. However, its engine is less reliable and requires frequent servicing under heavy print loads (every few thousand pages). The Imagen (Canon engine) has a poorer image unless recently tweaked but is more reliable. It will print 50,000 copies without a major service, and then a few hundred dollars for a new drum and belts makes it as good as new. I am not discussing software or font quality at the moment, in which Imagen has the advantage but QMS is trying hard. QMS is more expensive and offers no University discounts. (P.S. We have an Imagen, and I was formerly convinced that I was getting a QMS as our second laser printer. But now I am not so sure...)
