i would think that the primitives that ditroff supplies would be
sufficient until those in charge decide on some graphics ``standard''
for typesetting. it seems that it generally takes many years before a
standard gets hammered out and etched in stone.

the pictures that ditroff draws using the ``zillions of periods'' look
excellent. actually they look better than using the printer's built in
vector command because the width of the line can be controlled by the
point size of the periods you use. i don't know about other printers
but the symbolics draws one pixel wide lines when using the native
graphics commands. these don't usually reproduce that well.
