I have been getting literature from a laser printer place
called Talaris Systems. They claim to have a 300dpi/24ppm,
a 300dpi/12ppm, and a 300dpi/8ppm system. Prices are
$35k, $24k, and $10k, respectively with only 9 fonts included.
Other fonts around $100/ea. Software is extra
(for example $4000 for troff/nroff support).

Does anyone have their equipment? What does anyone else know
about their product?

[[Editor's note: Talaris bases their products on the QMS line of
printers. The three products mentioned here probably correspond
directly to the QMS 2400 (i'm not sure about this number), the QMS
1200 and the QMS 800. I believe they also supply fonts in ROM for the
QMS printers.

We have a Talaris 1200 laser printer running on our pdp11/70
(2.9bsd). Being the first pdp11 site to run their troff
support software (they only guaranteed it would work on a Vax),
we had some initial software conversion problems and font file
problems, but it is all working now.

It comes with 9 standard fonts in ROM and other fonts online
that are downloaded to the controller as needed. The troff support
s/w includes a cat to qms conversion program and all the
troff font sizes (6pt to 36pt) in Roman, Bold, Italic and
Special. In addition you have the choice of a serif or
san-serif font style.

The print quality is excellent. I think it is much better than
the Symbolics LGP1200 (Canon based) printer.

The Talaris/QMS software was the only one we had a chance of
being able to run on a pdp. Their software and hardware
support has also been very responsive.

Now if I can just get the QMSPLOT package to fit on our pdp,
I'll be happy.
