From: Jan E Pedersen <jannik@oslo-vax.ARPA>
We have just installed an Imagen 8/300 and I am trying to make
it work reasonably with Tex and LaTex (TeX82), our system is
a VAX 11/780 running 4.2bsd.
I would like ask these simple
Questions:
1. Fromwhere can I get(buy) sufficient 300px/inch fonts.
2. Has anyone done any work on making lplain.tex plain.tex
files for the supplied Imagen cm*fonts.
3. Does anybody know if Imagen is going to supply 300px/fonts
(raster files) for the rest of the tfm files on the
distribution tape.
Thanks in advance.

[[editor's note:
Let me make a first pass at answering some of these questions since I
am also responsible for the Unix TeX distribution.
1. We include on our distribution tape what we think is a
minimal set of fonts for 300 dpi devices sufficient to
run all of plain (TeX) and most of lplain (LaTeX). If
you find that you need more fonts, you can usually ftp
them from Score in <tex.pxl> (in "type local 8" mode,
also called "tenex" on 4.2) or you can buy one of the
font tapes from Maria Code.
2. If the cm* fonts provided by Imagen have a different
character ordering than that expected by plain and
lplain, then the likelihood is that they are for the
older character arrangement used in TeX78. It seems
rather unlikely that these will be supported---it's a
step backwards rather than one forward to support them.
3. The Imagen driver we supply on the tape uses the pxl file
format directly and hence you can use the pxl files supplied
on the tape. It will take a little conversion work to get
it to work with the 8/300, though---I'm trying to get
exact details for inclusion on the tape. The version
now on the tape has been used on the 5/480 in addition
to the 10/240, though---the necessary changes are
noted therein. There is also a pxl to rst converter on the
tape designed for use with the 240 dpi device and provided
by Lou Salkind. I don't know if this works with the
8/300. I also hear that Dan Curtis of Imagen is planning
to put pxl support into the Imagen-supplied TeX driver but
he's pretty busy and so it may take awhile before he has
the time to do it.
I hope this is enough. I'm sure that the Imagen and TeX group readers
on the list will feel free to correct me if I misspoke anywhere.
