From: decvax!esquire!newman@uw-beaver.arpa We now have four HP LaserJets, and, for $2990 a piece at 47th Street Photo, you can't find a better replacement for the Daisy-Wheel printer. We run them directly off the printer ports of our Terminals (vt220s, Ann Arbor Ambassadors, Televideo 950s). The font selection is limited, although getting better. We have one font cartridge with Bold and Italic Courier 10 pitch and a line printer font. Another has proportional fonts, with Times Roman in 8 point medium, 10 point medium, italic and bold, 14 point Helvetica Bold and the line printer landscape (yes, six fonts). We have hired a consultant to produce a TROFF conversion program and it seems to work well as a pseudo-typesetting machine. (The problems seem mostly to be to get his software to run on the Pyramid) One problem so far: The amount of control sequences, which are numerous combinations of Escape codes, can be so large that it takes up to 30 secs. send a typeset page at 9600 baud. Any one with questions is free to contact me, via mail or phone. Edmund Newman Davis Polk & Wardwell (212) 530-4420 ...cmcl2!rna!esquire!newman

From: sun!idi!kiessig@Berkeley Does anyone know of a troff (i.e. CAT) filter to drive the HP Laserjet printer? Or perhaps a ditroff back-end for it? Or any other similar S/W for it? Seems like a reasonable unit. Richard

From: William LeFebvre <phil@rice.ARPA> Is it possible to put many different point sizes into the HP at the same time? Troff likes to have at least 12 different sizes available at the same time (especially if you want to use eqn). I was under the impression that this could not be done. If this is true, then a troff translator isn't going to do you a whole lot of good. You would be a little better off with ditroff, since you can at least tell it what point sizes are available.
