From: Feng-Hsiung.Hsu@cmu-cs-vlsi.arpa In a review article of HP LaserJet printer in Sept. issue of Microcomputing, the author, whose name I can't recall, mentioned that LaserJet "stinks". The explanation given by the author was that the toner gave out an odor when heated. He also stated that HP actually suggested that the printer be placed in a well ventilated space during operation. Now we know that the Canon LBP-CX printing engine uses a dry toner system, and we also know that dry toner systems are less likely to give off offensive odors or fumes. And to the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever mentioned that LBP-CX smells either on this list or on other magazines. Was the reviewer having an ultra sensitve nose? Or was he just telling the truth that so many of the reviewers have ignored? If it does smell, somebody in Canon should be kicked. -- Hsu

From: RSanders@DENVER.ARPA I can, if I try hard, smell something in the vicinity of our Imagen 8/300 - but it smells most like hot paper to me! -- Rex

From: starkweather.pa@XEROX.ARPA Alas, my HP Laserjet does NOT stink. It runs in my office and having used about every laser printer ever marketed, I find that I wish it did stink so I could have some complaints. It just runs reliably every day. Gary [[Editor's note: Thanks also to Alan Parker, parker@nrl-css, for also reporting that his Canon didn't have any unusual smells. I think we can assume that the report about the Canon CX was incorrect so I'm not forwarding additional messages on this. Maybe the article confused the CX engine with the previous LBP-10 engine or something.]]

From: kyle.wbst@XEROX.ARPA Ozone is toxic in very low concentrations (check OSHA specs, but I think it's in the low part-per-million range). Don't sniff the stuff.
