From: ihnp4!sdcrdcf!darrelj@uw-beaver.arpa (Darrel VanBuer) We are about to receive a Xerox 8047 File and Print server, primarily to support our Lisp machines. However, it will sit on the same Ethernet as a VAX and some Suns running 4.2bsd, so it would be attractive to be able to use it with troff as well. There are two main functions needed to effect this: 1) translate troff output to Interpress-82 format (they are similar in spirit, but of course totally different in detail). 2) send the IP-82 format file over the Ethernet to the print server queue. (The Lisp machines can do this trick now with a one-line command, but it would be nice to automate the process, and even better to leave the Lisp machines out of the path). I am aware of XNS protocol work at Network Research Corp and ACC, and so far, the best anyone has done is connection with a Xerox file server. [The attractiveness of IP-82 over Ethernet is that Xerox has a whole line of printers (8040, 5700, 8700, 9700) spanning a 12 to 120 page per minute speed range, some which can print both sides, or colate, or staple; all of which understand IP-82 on the network. So: anybody willing to admit having done this (or seen it done)? Darrel J.
