[fa.laser-lovers] HELP with installing Imagen 8/300

laser-lovers@uw-beaver (laser-lovers) (11/06/84)

From: naren <naren%carleton.cdn%ubc.csnet@csnet-relay.arpa>
We just received our Imagen 8/300 with ethernet interface. This business
of setting up ethernet address and the "udp" number has me confused.
Would some kind soul help me out. Our /etc/hosts currently looks like

192.9.200.1	sun loghost	#this is our SUN ethernet, running
192.9.200.2	mercury #release 1.1
192.9.200.3	venus
192.9.200.4	earth
#
192.9.4.1	clan #VAX ethernet running 4.2 BSD
192.9.4.2	sun-vax

How do you I set up the entry for the laser printer. Where does the
"UDP port number 35" entry go?

Is there any utilities for dumping SUN screens to the laser printer?
Anything else I should know?

Thanks for the anticipated help.

The udp number goes in /etc/services (it will be immediately obvious how to
structure the entry).
You will also need a host entry for the printer in /etc/hosts (this latter
has to be made both in /etc/hosts on all your you unixes (e.g.
192.9.200.18 immie
Plus you have to tell your imagen (somehow) what it's address is (I know no
details about the imagen and software, I am only conversant with the
networking in 4.2)

In particular reference to the question about utilities for printing
images from Sun workstation displays:

The standard Sun software release (1.1 and later versions) contains
a utility program for generating screen dumps, named "screendump"
(see "screendump (1)", along with its counterpart, "screenload"
and "screenload (1)"). The output/input of these programs is in
Sun standard rasterfile format (described in /usr/include/rasterfile.h).
It is not difficult to compose a spooler output filter to translate this
format into whatever format a particular printer desires for raster image
data.

Sun does not generally supply the printer-specific output filters.
Imagen does supply this software for connecting their printers to
Suns, as part of Sun's third party program, and they include a
screendump output filter [perhaps "will include", and it's not
on the Imagen software tape you already have?].
