[fa.laser-lovers] QMS Lasergrafix 2400 Experience?

I've just read a News Release from QMS announcing their new
24 pages/min laser printer. It seems to be equivalent to
their QMS 1200, except for the speed and a paper capacity of
2000 sheets.

Since the paper capacity has been what's kept us from buying
the QMS 1200, the new machine seems to be the solution for us.

The QMS 2400 is supposed to be released here in Sweden early
1985, so i haven't had a chance to see it yet. Has anyone on
this list used it, and would you share your experience?

	Thanks,

Hi Folks,
Yes, we a have a QMS 2400 and two older 1200s. Our operations people can't
stop praising the 2400, They love the thing.

It has the autodensity control that our older 1200 didn't have
(Note: newer QMS 1200s have the autodensity control also) and the
3 paper trays all work! You can be reloading the 2000 sheet tray while
it is running off the smaller ones! Much less operator intervention required.
The 2400 has noticeablity better throughput even though
we are currently running all of them at 9600 baud.Even so I am told that ours
will soon be ECOed to get to the rated 24 pages a second. Xerox has found
that their engine is currently running around 19 pages per second.

The maintenance cost is less for the 2400 then for two 1200s.

The duty cycle seems to be much better. We have been running our 1200s
at 60,000 pages per month! They start losing contrast around 40,000 ppm.
The 2400 has taken over the main load now and after 6 weeks it is at
60,000(slow phase in) and the quality is just fine. I don't know for
sure but it looks like XEROX has cleaned up a lot of little problems that
the 1200 engine had; but remember I am comparing some very old(14 months)
1200s to a very new 2400.

As far as the QMS half of the package - The New micro code that came
with the QMS 2400 has the, long awaited feature, in that it now uses
the font base line to align dissimilar font on a line, instead of
the tops of the fonts. The format for down line loading of fonts has
also been changed to a more compact one(old format supported also).
Qms has also(finally) put out a font catalog with fonts that we
really want to buy!

If you waited this long to buy a laser printer then the QMS 2400 is
a good choice.

Thanks,
Frank DiPace
P.S. I don't work for QMS

[[Editor's note: O.K., before anyone else mentions this, the printing
rate is obviously pages/minute, not /second. /second would be quite a
wonderous thing to see. --Rick]]
