This in in response to several requests that I received after my last
message about the QMS 2400. It seemed easier to send the information to the
entire list so that every one will benefit.

The QMS 2400 is one of a series of Laser printers available from Quality Micro
Systems of Mobile Alabama. Phone # 1-205-633-4300. QMS started their line
of laser printers by attaching a an M68000 based interface to a XEROX 2700
engine. The combination was and is called the QMS 1200. It offers Prom
based fonts, down line loadable fonts, bit mapped images, several graphics
modes, and many other nice features. The XEROX engine and the QMS interface
have been very reliable.

QMS now offers the same interface in several other packages.
One is a smaller Canon based printer they call the QMS 800. QMS also
has a smaller less expense version of the Canon with basic multiple font
capability.

The package I was talking about in my last message is called the QMS 2400.
It is physically the same size and shape as the 1200 except for the extra
2000 sheet tray that hangs off the side. The basic engine is made by XEROX
and is an upgrade of the XEROX 2700.

It has the same 300 dot/inch capability as the 1200 (and 800, etc) but
has a longer duty cycle and higher throughput then the 1200.

Prices (in round numbers) are:

QMS 800 $10,000 smaller version @$4,500
QMS 1200 25,000
QMS 2400 35,000

Price includes one interface, both serial and parallel are available,
and 12 PROM based fonts.
Educational discounts are available but talk to QMS for details.

QMS originally supplied fonts that were only passable and had no real
family of fonts that could be used with various word processing packages.

They have improved the font picture quite a bit over the last year and
now offer a wide range of fonts with even more amazing things to come.
Their Troff package called QTroff has some very good software loadable
fonts supplied with it. They also have a complete TEX package available
but we have no experience with it.

I hope I have answered most of the questions I got about the 2400 and
will answer future questions directly. If you require specific
information on pricing and options please contact QMS at the number
listed above.

[Rick -- I'm glad you caught my pages/second before I got deluged
 with mail about it. ]

Thanks,

Sounds wonderful. Does anyone know if QMS plans to offer an Ethernet
connection at some time in the future?

Has QMS fixed there controller to "talk back" to the host
and tell it when it is out of paper, what fonts are loaded
and other such useful information (like how man pages were
imaged...). This is the main reasons we still use Imagens.
