From: Chuck Bigelow <CAB@SU-AI.ARPA> I have received several inquiries about the reasons for original typeface design for digital screens and printers. Rather than make individual replies, let me refer those interested to some recent thoughts on this subject: "Font Design for Personal Workstations" BYTE, January 1985 This may be a good place to start. For those whose appetite is only whetted by the BYTE article, a much longer (Unpublished) discussion of the same topics (with more historical, aesthetic, and conceptual detail) can be obtained by writing to my secretary: Rosemary Napier Department of Computer Science Stanford University Stanford, CA 94305 or sending net mail to RFN@SU-AI 1. Ask for a copy of: "Principles of Font Design for the Personal Workstation" 2. Promise that you will not reproduce or distribute it. 3. Be sure to enclose your U.S. Postal address. Neither essay recommends specific typeface designs, software, or hardware. They discuss principles. It is assumed that perspicacious readers will draw their own conclusions.
