From: Richard Furuta <Furuta@WASHINGTON.ARPA> Recently, I asked for information about what kind of transparancy to feed into a LaserJet (Canon CX marking engine). In addition to the messages sent directly to the list, a couple of notes have come to me privately. Some of the information included in these notes seems quite relevant. Since I didn't ask for permission to redistribute, I'm going to paraphrase the information. One message, from a source that I certainly would consider knowledgable, indicates that using improper kinds of plastic can ruin a Canon CX. This person suggests using 3M Scotch 503 Transparency Film for Plain Paper Copiers D.C. / Part # 021200-15921 (without white sensing strip) For labels, he suggests Avery Self-Adhesive Address Labels for Plain Paper Copiers which come in a range of sizes. A further warning is that you should not use material meant for iron-on transfers to t-shirts (apparently some exists for photocopiers) since the pressure rollers in the CX act as both iron and t-shirt and this will also damage the machine. Another correspondent mentions films designed for use in Xerox roll-fuser copiers. Suggested part numbers are 3R2780 (clear), 2R870 (red), 3R871 (blue), 3R872 (green), 3R873 (yellow), and 3R809 (assorted colors). Cost is about $60 for one box of 100 sheets. These have the white edge stripe. He also mentions another variety with paper backing that is removed after the copy is made (without the white edge stripe) with Xerox part number 3R2783-3R2788 for the various colors that may work as well. Several correspondents mention that the thermal transfer type of film made by 3M won't work at all---you get a nicely gray piece of plastic, though. Thanks to everyone who replied. --Rick -------
