For a whole lot of reasons (not very many of which have been mentioned explicitly in this discussion so far) we can't imitate exactly the character shapes or the intercharacter spacing of typefaces that were intended for other technologies of reproduction: so we shouldn't try. Rather, we should design and fit the fonts we make so that they work properly in their own right. All I would like to add to your message is a little change to Tschichold's words: " . . . all the basic strokes of a word should *look as though* they were spaced at approximately equal distance."
