From: Robert McKay <RIM@SU-AI.ARPA> The discussions on PostScript spacing/scaling have focussed on twom main design goals so far:` a) graphic manipulability - for which geometric scaling is obviously the answer b) typographic excellence (as far as this can be accomplished at 300 dpi) - Les and Brian have rather done this to death (without to my mind really answering anything - the best answer clearly is to look at the output, and the only sample I`ve seen, the Adobe PostScript manual, is pretty good) But for many of us (wellm me, anyway) the main interest of PostScript is its resolution independence, and the foreshadowed printers from Linotype. In that context, my main goal with a 300 dpi printer would be that it reflect the typesetter optimised spacing accurately. Will this be possible in any reasonable way, through default action, or will Braian's semi-kiludge of down-loading spacing tables be required? (from reading the manuals, I can't really see an alternative) Bob McKay
