Times Roman and Helvetica are usually the first typefaces created
(copied) by a type producer because they remain the most popular
typefaces in the US, in terms of sales. It may be arguable that they are
easier to produce, but this is most likely not the first consideration.

Try reading: "Typography: how to make it most legible" by Rolf F. Rehe
