From: sasaki@harvard.arpa (Marty Sasaki) Our Versatec is getting old and the quality is deteriorating rapidly. We have decided to replace it with a laser printer of some sort. The primary use will be graphics with some TeX and TROFF work. Almost all of the graphics work is done using the SLAC graphics package. We would probably be willing to go to another package if the functionality was similar. Is there software that will do this? For which laser printers? How much should we expect to pay? From: John W. Peterson <JW-Peterson@utah-20.arpa> I can recommend the Apple LaserWriter. By using Adobe's TranScript, you can get TROFF support (real nice). The font/graphics stuff has enough horsepower that if somebody hasn't brought TeX up on it yet, they must be working on it - it can be hard. Using PostScript, you can easily write interfaces to existing graphics package - we've done that in a couple of instances here (apollo screen dumps, MacPaint, frame buffer images, etc) and the results are excellent. -------

From: sasaki@harvard.arpa (Marty Sasaki) Adobe doesn't offer a port to VMS, so we would have to do that ourselves. I also haven't heard anything (either good or bad) from folks using TeX on the LaserWriter, but this would be necessary for our uses. I'll check on this since Harvard is part of the Consortium and we can probably get a good deal on a Laser Writer... Marty Sasaki (sasaki@harvard)
