From: ucscc!alan%ucscm.ucscc.UUCP@Berkeley (99404000) We have had a Xerox 8700 laser printer for the last year. The machine has done a good job at meeting our needs. It is connected to our IBM 4341 via an online interface and is our workhorse for batch administrative printing. It also handles the majority of our UNIX printing through a low speed network interface between the 4341 and 13 UNIX machines. We are close to implementing troff printing using the Tplus package from Textware. The 8700 has been on lease for the last year and now we are evaluating a buy-out. The break-even point is 2-3 years depending upon volume. I would like to see comments from readers of "laser- lovers" as to the wisdom of a buy-out. Is there an announcement on the horizon that will significantly erode the current value of the 8700? Most of the action in the laser printer market appears to be at the low end. The Xerox people I have been talking with feel that the 8700/9700 technology will be their primary high end offering for the next 2-3 years. I have looked at competing products (i.e., Delphax, IBM 3800 family, and HP) and none serve our needs as well as the 8700. I will collect comments and share with group. Thanks.
