If you set pagetype to 'note' on LaserWriter, it cuts down the imageable
area very slightly (but still big enough for almost all documents) and
increases user memory from 240k to 344k.  This should help substantially,
but I haven't explored the limits.  It also seems to be necessary to
change the page-offsets.

Easy way to do this:

1. add line containing 'note' near start of file "tex.ps" (say, as line 6).

2. decrease Page-X-Offset by 40 and Page-Y-Offset by 110 in "tex.ps"
   (no, I don't know why).
