The reason for the atrocities you mention (I agree with your appelation)
is to maintain compatibility with QuickDraw.  Remember that the QuickDraw
pen is rectangular and hangs below and to the right of the current point
as it traces the line.  Laser Prep simulates this obnoxious behavior.
I can't complain enough about Apple's poor support for high quality
laserprinting.  And I still don't have a good way to send PostScript
to the laserprinter from a Macintosh application.

My favorite arrowhead is an isoceles triangle with a circle cut out
of it.  For example:

will draw an arrowhead of unit length along the X axis with the base of
the arrowhead at the origin.
