We took our 7 month old son to Japan (11 hour flight from SFO) and he was much better behaved than some of the adult passengers. He was at the limit for those bassinettes, which are about 30" long. More recently, we took him to the east coast (5 hours) and he was also fine. NOW he is crawling and extremely agile. I think a plane flight would be torture for us all, even though he is a very easy-going baby. Friends of ours just took their 14-month old to St. Louis and she was miserable for the whole flight because she wasn't used to having to sit still. On the way back they tried drugging her, but it only made her unstable as they walked her back and forth in the aisles. For small ones, nursing or sucking on a bottle can help relieve the ear pressure, but our baby seemed unbothered by take-off and landing. Another use for barf bags in flight: the airline attendant can fill the bag with very hot water to warm up a jar of baby food. Fill the bag to a reasonable level, pop in the jar, close for 5 minutes or so, then take out the jar and feed your little one. Evidently, airline "reconstituting ovens" are not really microwaves, so they won't put anything but the airlines trays in the ovens. Patricia Collins hplabs
