[net.kids] Followup on Snugli

stanwyck@ihuxr.UUCP (Don Stanwyck) (02/09/84)

Okay. I have read the request, and at least one other person's answer. I
feel a need to express myself on the subject.

We own three carriers - one a Snugli, one a Gerri (?), and finally one made
specifically for us by a friend working from a La Leche League (?) pattern.
The Gerri was given to us, and we paid for the other two. We never have been
able to use the Gerri - it is too uncomfortable for both of us and the baby -
but have continued to own it (what do you do with gifts from very close family
who were very well intentioned?).

Snugli: For us uncomfortable, hard to use (as compared to LLL), better for
small babies than large as it is one-size fits all of the same age. It is
adjustable (though the snaps are bothersome), but from our experience and
that of our friends seems to fit smaller babies better (We had a whopper.)

LLL : Most comfortable, but still not trivial to put on. My wife was never
able to put any of the carriers on by herself.

General notes: Big babies get heavy fast. Smaller babies get heavy, too.
We tried to use it most when our son was 2-10 months. At 15 months and over
30 pounds (as he is now) he is much too large for any of them.

Try before you buy. Get a friend to loan you one for a week before you buy
any model. Some people swear by Snuglis, others swear at them (i.e. our
LaMaze instructor - a mother of 3 ).

The front carriers are fine up to about 6 months. I couldn't use the
Gerri either, but had another type that was usually comfortable. After
6 months, babies have enough `starch' in them them to switch to a frame
back carrier (I used a Gerri). My girls loved it, and it was much
easier than fighting stairs with a stroller. They used it until they
were each about 3, at which point they wouldn't fit and I was getting
tired.

I'm one of the ones who swear BY the Snuglis.
My baby was born at 9 lbs 5 oz, and I used the Snigli daily
for walks until shw was about 10 months old!
I even used it when flying to the USENIX conference,
when shw was oave a year, and over 25 lbs!!
She fit fine, was content, and slept most of the way...

I use the Gerri now for walks in the woods, where I don't
think she can handle the terrain -

Opps- system going down...

I have also used a front carrier (Snugli) and found it to be quite
useful (and convenient). Our daughter would often sleep when she was
in it. When she got older (and heavier) I switched to a Gerri back
carrier, but it got heavy too quickly. I attached the Gerri carrier
to my backback frame and found it much easy than using a stroller
esp. around steps and rough terrain.

I totally agree that Snugli's are great. My daughter even slept
through "The Empire Strikes Back" in a Snugli.

I wonder if it was really that boring?
