Our son is currently 16 months old and an only child. I've read in several
magazines recently that 18 months is an ideal time to start a child in a
'play group' situation. I gather this means a couple of hours a day,
playing with other kids, getting them used to playing with others and
developing social skills. Does anyone out there know if 18 months is
too early to begin this? Where does one go about finding a play group?

My wife works in the YMCA child-care center, where staff children and guests children stay during the day. He has made some very good friendships with some of the other staff kids, and knows some of the regular guests' kids as well. He has also learned a lot of social skills, and has had access to a lot of toys/play equipment that we could not afford to get for his use at home. I suggest that you check with some of the day-care or drop-off facilities in your area, determining whether they will allow you to bring your son in for short periods of time at regularly scheduled times. My son, a second born, is starting "Toddler Time" at 13 months. That
's partly due to his age and partly due to the "class" quarter schedule.
In our case, this class is really "adult education", since the kids are
of course accompanied by a parent or care giver, and in theory there
is adult education going on. Really, it's a great way for parents to
get together with others to see other adults, and to get kids together.
