[net.kids] Books about Birth and Childrearing

betsy@dartvax.UUCP (Betsy Hanes Perry) (11/20/84)

An excellent source of books on birth and childrearing is
the Orange Cat Goes to Market catalog, available from
Orange Cat
442 Church St.
Garberville,CA
95440.

This catalog is full of books, tapes, and postcards for and about children.
All books are reviewed; the author has a 'granola organic' viewpoint,
but she's very forthright about her biases. This book is certainly
not limited to organic parenting; books on Your Expected Caesarian
are cheek by jowl with books on Birthing at Home. There are books
about infertility, miscarriage, and child death, as well as the more
obvious topics. This catalog is about support:
finding books which can help you achieve whatever version
of parenting you prefer. I recommend it highly; so does the Whole Earth
Catalog.

A sample review:
THE CESAREAN BIRTH EXPERIENCE
Bonnie Donovan
paper 5.95
If you have been told you will probably have to have a Cesarean you
need not give up the thought of having a joyful shared childbirth
experience. This book provides much needed information & reassurance --
not the least of which is that Cesarean parents can be active participants in
the birth. It is certainly time that Cesarean births be viewed as the
entrance of loved babies into the world, rather than as surgical procedures.

I should probably warn you that I'm not a parent; even so, this catalog
looks worthwhile to me.
