[net.kids] info on 20-40lb. car-seats wanted

dave@utcsrgv.UUCP (Dave Sherman) (11/18/84)

At 7 months and 28 inches, Ariela is now outgrowing her
Dyno-Mite car-seat (the type which faces backwards when
strapped in, and can be carried out). We'd appreciate
comments on what to get now - there seem to be a number
of models on the market, some with a front bar, some without.
Any particular recommendations?

I swear by the Strolee. It is not too expensive, lightweight, versatile,
and seems safe. In the front seat you use the shoulder harness and get the
benefits of an inertia reel; this seems to make the kid much happier.
In the back seat there is a shoulder harness arrangement that stores in the
car seat itself and hooks to a rear-deck hook.

The best part is that it is lightweight and, in the front seat, trivial to
connect and disconnect (about as much work as your own seat belt). This
makes it ideal for use in other peoples' cars. Never again do you have to
send your kid out without a car seat!

We have a One-Step (by Questor I think) that we really enjoy.
It has a spring loaded bar that comes down over the childs
head and straps for their shoulders that are attached to the
bar. I would suggest either getting one with a corduroy cover
unless you are handy with designing covers (or you could buy one,
I suppose), since the dark brown vinyl gets very hot.

Our favorite feature is that Samantha (our 16 mo. daughter, pride
and joy, etc :-) ) can help fasten herself in, usually. All
that she has to do is pull the bar down in front of herself and
leave the actual latching to us. The latch is a very heavy duty
small seatbelt latch.

Hope this helps.
