First we found out last year he was perceptually impaired; next we reported that he had started to really read on his own. Now comes the next in the line of positive developments: We got a call yesterday from his teacher that Jacob is being mainstreamed into a "regular" math class because he shows a significant talent for manipulating numbers. What can I say? We are still a bit overwhelmed by the changes in so short a time. What is even more incredible is the nature of Jake's achievement, i.e., that it is in math. Neither I nor my wife are capable of working a checkbook without various job-aids. Somewhere there is a recessive gene that became unrecessed! Now if only we can work to keep the Wayne School Board from phasing out the Perceptual Impairment classes in favor of buying new jackets for the football team. . . . -- Ken Wolman Bell Communications Research @ Livingston, NJ lcuxc!kenw (201) 740-4565 ("My doctorate's in Literature, but that feels like a pretty good pulse to me. . . .")
