We managed to make the transition for our boys from crib to bed
virtually painless by making a big deal out of it, but in a very
positive direction, i.e., as proof that the child in question was
now a "big boy" who could sleep in a bed of his own. Part of the
transition was for me to disassemble the crib and assemble the new
bed in front of the child, so no mystery was attached to the
changeover. Our older boy, as I was assembling the bed, decided
to jump up and down on the box spring; our younger, when it was
his turn some years later, waited patiently until I was finished,
then hurled himself face down on the mattress, laughing his head off.

Bottom line: I expect most kids will accept the situation if the
parents present it positively, as something that proves the child is
growing up. One note of warning: if your child tends to be a
restless sleeper, get some guardrails and put them on either side
of the bed to avoid fall-outs.
