[net.music] Surf Punks

steve@micomvax.UUCP (12/13/84)

Has anyone out there heard of the Surf Punks? I think they are
(were?) a Californian based band. Their music is straight ahead
rock and roll with great lyrics. If anyone has any info on the
group, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks

The Surf Punks are a bunch of rich beach kids from Malibu
who occaisonally get their act together and play music. They have two
albums out, Locals Only and My Beach, plus several singles. Also, much
Surf Punks regalia can be purchased by mail order (as can their albums)
from Dayglo Records, P.O. Box 374, Malibu, CA 90265 (it is possible that
this address is outdated, so don't send cash or drugs). One of the all
time great bands to see live, they tend to do about 2 gigs a year, and
rarely leave southern California. I have heard that they occaisonally
play under the name of the Jillionaires when Dennis Dragon doesn't want
to get out of the water. Also, Scott Godard has an EP out (Your Fool)
which has a fine tribute to those pillars of the auto supply industry,
the Pep Boys.
All of us who live within walking distance of the beach in
southern California have come to respect the Surf Punks as tireless
champions of our basic right to clean beaches, big surf, and no Vals,
OK?

P.S. All you pseudo hardcore poseurs should check out the Pop-o-pies
album. Anti Reagan and stuff man, yeah.

Yep, I heard of 'em, word is, they actually surf. I've seen a couple
of their videos, (my wave, shark attack) and they're hilarious. Don't
know what they're up to now though, haven't noticed any new albums.

If you like them, you'll probably like the 'Red Hot Chili Peppers', who
seem like Surf Punks with a western instead of a beach flavor. Their
video 'I don't kill coyotes' (or at least something about killing
coyotes, I forget) is a scream.

I have their first (and only?) album. I'm not sure if they're still
together; I do know that the keyboards were played by Dennis Dragon
(son of Darryl Dragon, of Captain & Tennielle). Good dance 'til you
drop music.

Just saw Scott ("Cowpunk") Goddard, who claims he was in the Surf Punks
and wrote their songs. He and his band did a couple of Surf Punks songs,
and they were the (unofficial) hits of his set. Check him out if he
swings by...

Dennis Dragon is Darryl Dragon's brother, not Darryl Dragon's son.

The Surf Punks just released a song this past summer that was really
good. "Welcome to California - (now it's time that you go home)"
was played an awful lot on LA's KROQ. I think they have an album
out with that song on it, but I haven't been able to find it
anywhere. Has anybody heard of this?? Does anybody care???

Their latest album that I know of is "No Fat Chicks." A freind
of mine picked it up in New York this past summer. It's probably
on there. I've got another album that has such tunes as
"Big Top", "Beer Can Beach", "Here Come the Surf Men", etc.
Glad to hear somebody else listens to the Surf Punks!

I think that you will find that the surf punks are a little older than you
believe them to be. Dennis Dragon and Daryl Dragon (of the Captain and
Tennille) are brothers. From what I understand, the band was started a few
years ago in California as a joke answer to then-current punk fads. It's
too bad they seem to have broken up.
