I am only reposting part of the original message, but I think the notion
remains. I have recently watched a friend return to the university after
being out for 5 years. Her misery reminded me that I never learned very
well in school and loathed it. But how much does that matter when my
meal ticket is based on my undergraduate work 15 years ago & my graduate
work 5 years past. An effort to change professions will likely require
a new ticket and (gasp!) yet another standardized test to be considered
for admission to the game. So the kids don't get to discover how they
learn best. How well can they score on the GRE? Isn't that what
this society values?
