As new parents of an 8-week old son (who's beautiful, BTW), we find the use of disposables best for travel, etc., but like cloth diapers at home. Besides the advantages of natural fibers, we found that using a local diaper service was the CHEAPEST way to go in any case! We pay something like $10.50 per week for 110 diapers, which are delivered every Monday. The used diapers are just put in a plastic bag, with no rinsing or anything, and get picked up just as easily. We put the full used bags in a new metal garbage can outside the house, for obvious reasons. Yes, I am aware that some people feel that the services put chemicals in the wash that can irritate some babies, but we have had more diaper rash problems with disposables than cloth. BTW, the best treatment for diaper rash, as suggested by the pediatrician, is to just air and sun baby's bare bottom for a period of time each day. If you have a diaper service in your area, check out their prices and service. Might be an attractive alternative to disposables or washing your own. %Walt (not associated with any diaper service other than as a customer)
