           Child Care Center

     Wiggling,squirming,shrieking

       teeming with life and purpose

       chaotic overlay of small demands

       urgently pleaded.

Into this maelstrom I have come

       bringing a gift to share

       the need to nurture.

     Adorable and vital every one

I would not choose a favorite.

But how to share love sliced so thin

       it desiccates and blows away

       before it nourishes?

               Evan Kane

WHOOPS! new to the network

My wife and I have just moved to NJ from Cambridge, MA with two (twin)
seven year old daughters. We both work and are surprised at the lack
of after-school programs available in the area. It's hard to believe that we are
the only ones around that require two incomes to support a
decent standard of living and pay back student loans.
I guess we've been spoiled by the excellent childcare (among other
things we miss) available in Cambridge.
Any thoughts on alternatives to the "Latchkey" syndrome?

Where in NJ are you? The Red Bank Y runs a Latchkey program for
grades 1-6; they even pick up from some schools. Babysitters (awful
word) are not so hard to find; check the bulletin boards in the local
supermarkets, ask around in your neighborhood, put a small ad in your
local paper. Expect to pay about $3/hr.
