Dear fellow netters, Below is what I expect to be the last of my exchange of letters with 60 Minutes regarding their Dungeons & Dragons segment. It consists of a reply I received from them, which apparently crossed in the mail with my second letter, and my response to that reply. As of this posting, 60 Minutes has failed to take any action regarding their presentation of the Dungeons & Dragons segment and the contents of their letter indicate they have no intention of doing so. What can I say? At least we got someone's attention at CBS, however briefly and superficially. My thanks goes out to all of you who sent me messages of support and especially those who took the time to mail their own letters to 60 Minutes. At least they know we care and they aren't the only ones with access to some form of mass media. ============================================================================== CBS/BROADCAST GROUP CBS Inc., 51 West 52 Street New York, New York 10019 (212) 975-3166 Marjorie W. Holyoak, Director Audience Services Dear Mr. Hollombe: November 15, 1985 I am replying to your correspondence concerning the 60 MINUTES segment "Dungeons & Dragons". We regret to learn of your reaction to this report and have shared your observations with those responsible for the broadcast. 60 MINUTES deals with numerous subjects, and it is inevitable that reports will elicit both praise and criticism. Our Goal is to focus a journalistic eye on newsworthy persons and topics, and we do so without taking editorial positions. Although you did not care for "Dungeons & Dragons", the reaction we have received to it indicates that our efforts to be accurate and objective have been successful. Thank you for taking the time to write. We hope that future editions of 60 MINUTES will prove more to your liking. Cordially, M. Holyoak [signature] Mr. Jerry Hollombe P.O. Having you word processor insert my name and a key word or two isn't enough to keep me from recognizing it as a form letter. My home computer can do the same trick and I'm not impressed. By now you've received my second letter, which crossed in the mail with yours, and probably a few from some other people who saw the Dungeons and Dragons segment and considered your coverage biased and sensationalistic. Your form letter gave me no reason to retract anything I said in my last letter. I expect this will be my last written communication with you. You will either reconsider your actions or not and nothing further I can say to you will influence that. I would like to tell you one thing more about the people you've treated in such a cavalier manner. In over five years experience of fantasy gaming I've met all kinds of people playing these games, with one exception. I've met players of all ages, all sexes, all levels of skill and experience. Some have become close friends and a few I actively dislike. The only kind of player I've never met fantasy gaming is stupid. Without exception everyone I've ever met fantasy gaming has been above average in intelligence. In fact, the group I currently play with the most are all members of Mensa. By your own account there are at least several million fantasy gamers in the country. By now most of them have seen or heard about your presentation and its disregard of the facts. Like me, most of them have other things to do with their Sunday evenings. Sincerely, Jerry Hollombe [signature] Jerry Hollombe, M.A. P.O.
