No, total freedom is not guaranteed by our constitution (CONGRESS shall not make laws inhibiting the freedom of speech...), but nevertheless, it is part of our American heritage (violins, please) to be tolerant of people who are voicing their opinions. If they incite violence, they are (possibly) liable for the consequences, but the act of putting words on paper and distributing that paper is not illegal, and never should be. Unfortunately, for this philosophy to be truly effective, a society must be educated, so it can look at the words, gather their meaning, weigh that against the author's possible bias and other authors, and come to its own conclusions. That does not always happen, but we have to assume it can.
