I feel that with children being given bottles, it is REALLY worth trying to
1. never ever give the child the bottle in bed (teeth rot when bathed in
sweet fluids for hours, this includes milk or formulae)
2. since the bottle is a breast substitute, only give the child the bottle
(whether the bottle giver is male or female) in a manner similar to
what would be done were it a breast: ie, child sits on the lap and is
held by the parent
If the child never gets into the habit of wandering around with a bottle
of juice or whatever, and does not get one to watch TV with (or similar
things) the problem will not arise. It certainly was NO problem with our
child. But we only used a bottle as a functional equivalent to a breast.
At mealtimes, our child used a cup from age ~6mths (with help, at first).
