A couple folks have said here that it is the parents attitude that distinguishes ok spanking from spanking==child-abuse. One person even said that child abuse is always carried out angrily. I think these generalizations miss the mark. What matters is not the parents attitude, but the child's (i.e. the effect of the action on the child). You can with friendly intention cause great damage to a child, and you can angrily help them be a better person with a swat.
