I'm reading an interesting book now that I've seen no mention of here - "The Read-Aloud Handbook" by Jim Trelease. The copy I have is the revised and updated version. I would imagine that most of us on this net would be aware of the importance of reading to our children, so this is not some soap-box pitch to encourage everyone to read to theirs. Rather, what is interesting are the stats the author has pulled together showing the various correlations between testing scores, readers, amount of television time, etc. There is also a wonderful "Treasury" in the back of titles, with a description of the book and related titles as well as appropriate age groups, that are good books for reading aloud. I came upon this book at the suggestion of a second-grade teacher I met in a doctor's office. I was asking about titles for my nearly-four year old who is trying to sound out words. She glowed when talking about it, and I understand why. Louise E. Osterman Computer Corporation of America
