[net.misc] What are the names of Batman and Robin?

harley@ncoast.UUCP (Harley Green) (10/23/84)

This has been bugging me for the last two days but I still
can't seem to remember the names of Batman and Robin. Not
their real names but the names they used as their normal name
on the show. I think Batman's was Ward (?). Anyone remember?

Batman's real name was Bruce Wayne, Robin's was Dick
Greyson.

Do you know what Dick Greyson's folks did for a living (until
offed by evil bad guys and/or gangsters?)

Batman's "real-life" name was Bruce Wayne. Robin's was Dick Grayson.

Depending on how I interpret this, the man is asking for either

Bruce Wayne & Dick Grayson the secret identities
or
Adam West & Jay Ward (wazzat who played Robin?) anyway, the actors

Batman was millionaire Bruce Wayne. Robin was his nephew Dick Grayson.

No, no, no... Batman's name was Bruce Wayne (as in the Wayne Foundation,
etc.). You've got Robin's right. I think you've got the last names of
the character and the actor confused as I believe Burt Ward played Batman.

Just for completeness, there is a new "Robin". He is Jason Todd.
(Dick Grayson is now Nightwing).

Burt Ward played Robin/Dick Grayson.
Batman/Bruce Wayne was played by Adam West.

Sorry... That's close, but no cigar. Batman's secret
identity is Bruce WAYNE! You guys must be getting "Ward" from that
fact that Dick Grayson is Bruce Wayne's legal WARD.

How about Batman was Bruce Wayne; Robin was Dick Grayson. Batman
was played by Adam West. Dick Grayson was Bruce Wayne's ward (not his
nephew)

Okay, let's get all the players in the right positions...

Batman's secret identity is Bruce Wayne,
Robin's secret identity was Dick Grayson in the TV show.

(yes, there is a new Robin in the comics these days,
         but that's not really relevant)

On the TV show, Batman/Bruce Wayne was played by Adam West;
Robin/Dick Grayson was played by Burt Ward.

Ah, the joys of misspent youth. I remember watching Batman every week
(even twice for a while). Whenever they had occasion to mention the
civilian identities of Batman and Robin, it was always:

Millionaire Bruce Wayne, and
His Youthful Ward, Dick Grayson.

Charlie Martin asks:

I seem to recall stumbling across the origin story somewhere once (maybe
\\Fantastic Origins of Comic Superheroes// or some similar title. I'm pretty
sure they were circus aerialists, and I believe they got it while attempting
to stop a gang from making off with the circus' receipts from a performance.

Dick Grayson was the only child of a circus couple, and was part of their
flying trapeze act known as "The Flying Graysons." Some crooks trying to
extort the circus owner, put acid on the trapeze ropes, and the ropes broke
during his parents part of the act. They had no net, and were killed while
young Dick looked on helplessly. Batman who had been there trying to get the
crooks saw the tragedy, but couldn't help. When he found young Dick, he
recounted how he too had lost his parents to criminals, and had vowed to
fight crime. Young Dick wished to take the same vow, and so Batman took him
on as apprentice, since he figured young Dick's acrobatic skills would give
the kid an edge, and he also liked the idea of having a dedicated proetege.

No, no, no! Batman was actually millionaire industrialist Raymond Donovon,
and Robin was his ward, Ward Ward.

Batman was played by G. Gordon Liddy, and Robin by Carol Channing.
