[net.misc] Gene Spafford's complaint

spert@dragon.DEC (11/01/84)

Rather than send mail to the person who has aroused your ire, I want to
comment on two points.

1) You have quoted his response to you in full while only summarizing
your original message. This does much damage to your claim that he
   is overreacting.

2) If this person wanted the entire net to see his complaint about you
he could have posted it himself. If you have not received his permission
to post his correspondence, then you are being extremely rude.

A number of people have made this observation. I am including a copy
of the mail my program sent out. Judge for yourselves.

Perhaps I overreacted. I cancelled the article 2 days after I posted
it. I deleted the bozo's name from the letter, and I supposed I should
have delete the site information, too. I'm afraid I don't see that as
being extremely rude, espcially considering the content.

Actually, considering how "busy" this person claimed to be, I doubt he
could have found the time to post something to the net. And
considering how nasty he was, any such posting would have been to
net.flame and not net.misc. I saved him some of his precious time and
effort by posting it for him.

Can we drop the subject from postings now? If people want to continue
to harass me, please do it via mail. I'll respond to all mail, but it
may take time -- I get over 40 pieces of mail a day on the average, and
I'm supposed to be working on my thesis. (That's why I am loathe to
deal with 1600+ additional messages each month from old and/or broken
news software -- that's what started all of this.)

My apologies to Larry Harmon, the original Bozo, for associating his
name with the jerk who sent me the mail.

My original letter:

>>Subject: Your site is running old/broken news software
>>
>>[The following message was generated automatically as a response to
>>mail sent by your news software.]
>>
>>Every two weeks I post a list of active Usenet newsgroups and a
>>"checkgroups" news control message. Your site has responded to one of
>>the most recent of those postings with either an "unknown control
>>message" error, or a "cannot post to a moderated newsgroup" error in
>>response to an article to one of the newsgroups of which I am
>>moderator. This indicates that your site is probably running old or
>>broken news software, or that a site along the path from "gatech" to
>>"YOURSITE" is running such software and has incorrectly modified the
>>header of the articles.
>>
>>The current version of news software that should be used on the net is
>>version 2.10.2. If you are not running 2.10.2 news then your system
>>may not be treating moderated newsgroups correctly. It also will not
>>recognize "checkgroup" control messages.
>>
>>If your system is running 2.10.2 news, please check any local
>>modifications you have made to be sure you have not introduced any
>>errors into the code. You might also check with your immediate
>>neighbors and be sure they are running 2.10.2 news.
>>
>>If you are not currently running 2.10.2 news, it is strongly
>>suggested that you convert ASAP.
