This is probably a common question for newcomers to the net, but
here goes anyway.
What kind of modem (faster than 1200 baud) is required for a long distance
connection on this net? One of the local people in town have a UDS 4800
(208 A/B is the model number I think) baud modem that (with a dialer) can
go out over phone lines. Would that work with uucp? (They will need to
buy a dialer)
What gets used for the "backbone" sites? What with all the traffic they must
handle they must be connected all the time. A leased line from Berkeley
(ucbvax) to Maynard (decvax) must be terribly expensive.... So, this
problem must have already been faced.
The reasons for making this request are obvious. First is money. The phone
bill looks like it will be $400 per month. A faster modem would ideally cut
that to 1/4, or $100 per month. (paying for the modem in one years time or so).
(One question is, would it actually cut the transmission time to 1/4th? The
machine is a 750 with 2 dmf's, a dz, and an emulex dh emulator, we run 4.2).
What with tight money (and other troubles) $100 is a lot easier to afford
than $400.
The second consideration is simply the time required to receive the news
from our connection. It takes two hours, and usually by the time it gets
here it is 6:00 in the morning, which doesn't leave much time to distribute
it locally. (Now, we haven't yet optimized the scheduling of our call yet,
it may be possible to get it in a little earlier....) We are looking to
pass it on to a few local sites, but need to make sure it is all done by
8:00, so that the modems will be available for the *real* people.
What this boils down to is: 1) are the concerns reasonable? (At the moment
they do seem to be..) 2) Is it technically feasible? 3) Is there somebody
out there we can talk to with the existing 4800 baud modem? 4) Reading the
code it isn't immediately obvious what is required for a uucp connection,
will a half-duplex or synchronous connection work? (I must say, I have never
looked at the uucp protocol.... Just most of the other parts).
5) Am I violating net ettiquette by asking all this? If so, I apologize.
