[net.astro] Question on CCDs for amatures

As an amature astronomer (some say Junior Space Cadet)
who is not yet into astrophotography I have been toying
with the idea of using a CCD and doing some digital
enhancing of the image instead. Working in the computer
graphics field I have no shortage of output devices but
I am a bit lacking on the input side. Does anyone out in
net.land have any experence with this sort of thing?
I'm interested in any information on input devices (CCDs or ?)
and processing algorithms. I would guess that digital processing could

1. Freeze out atmospheric distortion. This would require
sampling the image at better than 50 times a second.
I have read that 1/50th of a second is the time of
a typical atmospheric fluctuation although under poor
seeing conditions I have observed longer period fluctuations.

2. Correct for guide errors. This is dependent on having a series
of short exposure images of the same object.

3. Correct for uneven illumination and large differences in
   brightness.

If there is interrest and I receive some information
I will summarize to the net.
