[net.astro] Uranus photo from Voyager -> not much yet guys

doug@escher.UUCP (Douglas J Freyburger) (10/03/85)

I saw the latest photo of Uranus in one of the buildings
in JPL today. It was a slightly blue blob. The edges
where obviously dimmer than the center, and that was it.
No features at all. It still isn't anything to write
home about, but it is getting better all of the time.

In several weeks, some features should start showing up,
THEN it will get interesting, but for now, no such luck.
If I walk by that corridor where the latest and greatest
photos are posted regularly, I will try to remember to post
any impressions. For now, I am just posting because there
were explicit questions about getting the pictures. It
isn't worth it yet, but it will be soon.

Say, how about posting some digitized data of the next picture,
it would be fairly easy to convert such data into a graph or
plot on just about any graphics device (or printer for that matter).

On page 215 of the October 5 "Science News", there is a 1/4 page picture
of Uranus and the largest 4 (Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon) of its
satellites. The rings, of course, are not visible, nor will they be
very obvious when Voyager gets closer.
