[net.astro] Comet?

dzekevich@kirk.DEC (JOE DZEKEVICH, 223-6369, MLO5-2/E50) (10/23/85)

Someone said in our local town paper that there is a comet now in
the northern sky. Does anyone in net-land know if this is true,
where and when to look? I have literature on where Halley's should
be later on in the year, but no information on this comet.

Thanks,

The comet now visible in the northern sky after sunset is Comet
Hartley-Good. Two weeks ago it was almost 5 degrees north of
Jupiter. I haven't seen it recently due to the glare from the
  Moon.

Two weeks ago it was about magnitude 7, and no tail was present.
  Anyone else see it?

There are four comets currently brighter than 10th magnitude in
the sky. Halley's comet is now about 9th magnitude, still in the
upper arm of Orion. Comet Thiele, discovered only about 2 weeks
ago, is at magnitude 9.5 rather close to Halley - some 10 degrees to
the north and west. Comet Giacobini-Zinner is also in the area, to the
east of Halley, though considerably south (declination around -10 by now).
Comet Hartley-Good, discovered about 6 weeks ago, is around magnitude
7.5 in the Capricornus area. I have elements for all four comets and
will post them and an ephemeris if there is interest.

Comet Hartley-Good (1985l) is discussed in the November issue of
Sky & Telescope. It is currently in Aquila and supposedly
around magnitude 7. Positions from Sky & T:
  Oct. 27 19h 29.7m +00d 04m
  Nov. 6 18h 49.9m +06d 57m
  Nov. 16 18h 20.1m +11d 36m
