[net.misc] GPIB bus pollable instrument serial numbers.

Ignore the impossible for a minute.
Has anyone heard of a GPIB programmable instrument that is capable of spitting its serial number out on the GPIB bus?
Are there advantages to such a feature other than it would free a scientist from manually noting the serial number of the instrument making a measurement?
