About information being destroyed (mainland China):

In my experience, most of the data is kept by the people themselves, and is
passed on down the generations.  I don't think one can find any info on the 
residents of pre-WW2 European countries.

Actually, it is possible to find a lot of information on Europeans
pre-WWII.  My mom has had a lot of luck with parish records, both
actually in Europe and reproduced on microfilm by the Mormons.
(I'm not sure what this has to do with mainland China, but somebody
mentioned the data was unavailable in Europe...)
