[net.roots] More German roots

hope@gatech.UUCP (11/06/83)

My surname used to be "Hoppe", but it was changed to "Hope" sometime last
century. Although the exact origin is unknown, my grandfather holds that it
comes from the German word for "hop" (the stuff that beer's made of), because
our ancestors had lived in the beer-producing part of Germany for centuries.
[By the way, I don't drink beer.]
