The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (better known as the Mormans) have filmed church registers, civil vital records, probate records, census returns, land deeds, naturalization records, passenger lists, tax lists, etc. Alex Haley said that had he known about the LDS Church's Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City, he could have cut two years from his research by spending one week in SLC. The library receives 90K visitors a month. It contains 1.1 million rolls of microfilm bearing information on more than a billion people from 60 countries. All of the above information is several years old so what they have is much more. The library is free to use and open to the public. They have their own church records, but as you can tell from the list above, they also have church records of all major denominations. The LDS has branch (stake) libraries in most major cities, and *anything* in SLC may be ordered for a two week loan through these branch libraries for several dollars. Before you order census or local records however, you might try your local library or larger city libray near you. They may have these records for free and you won't have to wait. Jim Jackson mb2c!jnj
