[net.roots] Genealogy Networks

djo@sdchema.UUCP (Denise O'jibway) (10/01/85)

Does anyone know of any genealogy networks. I just got
a terminal and a modem at home and I was wondering if
there were any groups I could dial into. I'm in
San Diego, California so I would prefer something in the
state but I'd also be interested in the east coast since
I may be moving there soon. Thank you.

There are several genealogy bbs's across the nation. The most
comprehensive and oldest is ROOTS-BBS in San Francisco at
(415)584-0697 300/1200 8/n/1 which has messages, genealogy software,
how to articles, surname queries, and general public domain software.
It has indexes to surname queries appearing in NY, New England, Ohio,
Iowa, Nebraska, PA, and California as well as indexes to the family
research of the ROOTS users. All these indexes are searchable online.
In excess of 6000+ queries. ROOTS-BBS has spawned (begat?!?) clones
in Ohio GENEALOG (614)-488-4736 and Illinois NORTHERN ILL GENEALOGY BBS
(815)-344-4767 and in Milpitas, CA (call ROOTS for that number). In
Texas there is TREESHARE (713)-667-5532 which has some limited census
information available searchable through soundex.
ROOTS-BBS is a free system. The only cost to you for those services
is the cost of your telephone call (connect charges). The other have
various fees. Give them a try and spread the word about this growing
nationwide genealogy net!
