[net.roots] The Mormon branch library and Siegenthalers

I'm posting this to net.roots because I want to give an example of what
you can find at a little local branch Mormon genealogical library.
The one I went to in Nashua, NH, has three small rooms. One room contains
about six microfilm readers. The second room contains about the same
number of microfiche readers. The third room contains a small number of
books (two or three five foot bookshelves) and cabinets containing
the microfiche and microfilm.

Ron,
I looked for your Christian Siegenthaler in Switzerland the last time
I was at the Mormon branch library. Switzerland is crawling with
Siegenthalers. All of the records for Christian Siegenthalers they had
were from the Bern Canton. Now there is a Wassen in Switzerland that is
not in the Bern Canton. It is about 50 mountainous miles east of Bern. But
there is a Wasen, that is in the Bern Canton, which may become relevant
below. I found five Christian Siegenthalers born around 1780 to 1790.
I think the first one is the most likely to be yours, though it may be
that none of them are.

Christian s. of Christian Siegenthaler and Anna Roethlisberger
    b. 8 NOV 1870 in Bern [canton], Langnau im Emmental. There is
a Langnau about ten miles east of Bern on the Emme river in the
Emmenthal region that I assume is this town. It is about 7 miles
due south of Wasen, but more like 15 miles by road. I could find no
other records of children born to this couple. But I was scanning
rather fast over a myriad of records.

Christian s. of Johan Siegenthaler and Anna Barbara Fankhauser, b. 20 MAR 1872
in Bern, Lutzelfluh. Lutzelfluh is about 15 miles by road from both
Wasen and Langnau. Johan and Anna Barbara were married 28 AUG 1863
in Muri bei Bern, which is a suberb on the eastern side of Bern.
They had to following other children that I could find by scanning, all
of them I believe born in Trub, which is ten miles east of Langnau by road:

    	Sophie born 1863
    	Johannes born 1866
    	Anna Elizabeth born 1870
    	Rosette born 1876

Christian Ernst Siegenthaler s. of Peter Siegenthaler and Anna Barbara Zulauf
[or Zeilauf, I can't read my own handwriting] b. 28 JAN 1866 in Langnau
im Emmenthal. They also had a son Karl born in 1867.

Christian Louis Siegenthaler s. of Christian Siegenthaler and Adele Huguinet
    b. 23 May 1870 in Trubschachen, five miles from Langnau and farther from
    Wasen.

Christian s. of Bendikt Siegenthaler and Anna Fankhauser b. 30 JAN 1878
in Trub. They also had the following children I believe all born in Trub:

    	Barbara born 1762
Ulrich born 1763 (probably died young because of Johan Ulrich below)
    	Johan Ulrich born 1764
Nicklaus born 1767 (probably died young because of Nicklaus below)
    	Benedict born 1768
    	Anna born 1769
    	Magdalena born 1773
Nicklaus born 1774 (probably died young because of Nicklaus below)
    	Verena born 1776
    	Lucia born 1779
    	Peter born 1781
    	Daniel born 1783
    	Nicklaus born 1786

P.S. These records are all from the IGI (International Genealogical Index)
I did not have to mail off for this information. It was right there
in the microfiches that all (I think) of the branch libraries have. There
is probably branch library near you. My branch library also has the AIS
(Advanced Indexing System [or Service]) microfiches which index the censuses
between 1790 and 1850, and other miscellaneous records. It also has the GLC
which is the microfiche card catalog of the main library in Salt Lake City.
From this you can order anything that has been microfilmed (a lot) for
$2.35 a microfilm. And coming soon will be a microfiche set of the 1000 most
often used books in the main library. I can't wait.
